The Academy at Harvard Medical School has been established to restore the central role of teaching in our profession and at Harvard Medical School. The Academy's mission is to provide greater recognition for teaching efforts and to support the educational activities and enhance the skills of the entire community of teachers at Harvard Medical School.
The Academy supports the development and implementation of innovative curricula, educational resources and educational scholarship at Harvard Medical School by:
Facilitating excellence and innovation in teaching;
Fostering the choice of a career path with teaching as a major component;
Providing a locus for the exchange of ideas about teaching and a platform for enhanced interactions among basic, social, and clinical scientists;
Acquiring new resources to support teaching.
The Academy works closely with members of the Program in Medical Education, many of whom serve as ex officio members of the Academy, and others in the HMS community on the activities outlined below.
Academy Members Members of the Academy are active teachers of medical students, graduate students, and/or post-graduate trainees who are recognized for their excellence as teachers and mentors. Many are also accomplished in areas such as curriculum development, faculty development, educational scholarship, or educational assessment. Academy members represent all stages of careers, from most junior to most senior, and are diverse with respect to gender, ethnicity and discipline. Academy members are emissaries of the Academy at their home departments and education councils, and at regional and national meetings. Members also take on leadership roles within the Academy and lead specific innovation projects. Academy members may also participate in the review of proposals for Academy-funded innovation projects, and may serve as mentors for faculty, trainees or students involved in such projects.
